Looking to teach your kids about wild animals? Want a beautiful all-in-one-resource at your fingertips?
The first thing that catches your eye about this great hardcover book is the cool holographic tiger image on the front cover.
Inside this book are 247 full-color pages filled with text, followed by a glossary and an appendix for easy reference.
Want to know about monkfish? Turn to page 102. How about phasmids? Why, they’re on page 86, of course! In case you’re like me and have NO CLUE what a phasmid is, well…you’ll just have to read the book of course! Just kidding. I’ll throw you a bone here – it turns out that a phasmid is another name for stick and leaf insects (ones whose bodies look like twigs or flat leaves).
This gorgeous book details many of the wonders of God’s creation separated by animal type:
- Simple Animals
- Worms, Snails & Starfish
- Insects & Other Arthropods
- Amphibians & Reptiles
Each of these sections are then drilled down into many subtypes of animals, giving you hundreds of animals to read about.
I was flipping through this on my own while my six-year-old was playing, and one of the facts struck me as really interesting. I stopped him and asked if he knew which animal has the longest, most complicated song. To which he (correctly!) answered, “Yes – the humpback whale”.
One of the things that I love about interacting with kids of this age is their ability to store and retrieve random facts and details! I asked him how he knew that, and he told me that he had heard it in a book somewhere…..at least now I’ll have random, interesting facts at my fingertips to either challenge him or keep up with him (ha!).
