Cleaning Trouble-Spots: The Lazy Flushing Toilet and the Soap Scummy Glass Shower Door

I’ve been on quite the cleaning kick lately! I’ve had to do some online searches for solutions to some of our trouble spot areas in the bathroom. Here are the results:

The Toilet:

Our toilet has had a lazy flush for….as long as I can remember. This basically means that the toilet flushes completely whenever the heck it wants to. The other times it just lamely sucks down a little water, adds a little more, and that’s about it. (But enough visuals for you on that one!)

Anyway, I recently tried letting CLR (Calcium, Lime & Rust remover) soak in there for a little while. The results were….meh.

I then put on my handy-dandy rubber gloves and pumice-stoned the heck out the toilet. That REALLY did a good job on our mineral build-up! Then I took a paperclip, straightened it out and poked it around in all of the little “jet” holes under the rim of the toilet, and the giant jet-hole at the bottom of the toilet.

Oh my goodness, I know I’m going to sound crazy here, but I’m so excited to flush my toilet now. It. Flushes. Every. Time. (Can you tell we were living with that problem for WAY too long??) 🙂

On to the Glass Shower Door:

The first thing I read was to scrub it with a wet dryer sheet. I guess it sort of removed some of the soap scum….it didn’t do the greatest job, though. (btw, I’ve tried a million different spray cleaners, and they don’t really cut it, either).

The next viable suggestion that I found was to make a paste out of cornstarch and water and gently scrub it on. Wipe with a damp cloth and then a dry cloth. I was pretty impressed with how well this worked! I was not as impressed with how it globbed all over my bath mat, but we’ll give it a gold star for flaking off into the trash can with very little argument.

As an aside, cornstarch and water makes a fantastic science project/play toy for the kiddos! Have you ever worked with it before? It’s such a bizarre substance…’s a liquid – no wait, it’s a solid – ummmm, it’s a liquid again…..

What are your trouble cleaning spots? Do you have any great cleaning tricks to share?

  1. I wish I had enough gumption to pay that much attention to our toilets. They need it. I just can't bring myself to do it. Ugh.

ROFL, Cindy! It was a necessity…..NOTHING was flushing. We had to dump extra water into the bowl as we were flushing to get anything to go down. (Probably more info than you needed, but maybe will make you feel better? Haha!)
