Scripture Sunday: Like A Tree

I was talking with a friend the other day, and she was sharing a message that she heard in a church service.  Evidently there are many references in the Bible to man being like a tree.

The gist of the message was that as a tree needs to be well-rooted in the ground in order to grow and flourish, we need to be well-rooted in the Word in order for us to grow and flourish. If we are not rooted in the Word of God, then we are walking in the flesh, rather than walking in the Spirit.  How can we have discernment and wisdom, unless we daily study God’s word?

I’ve been chewing on this for a couple of days.  My Bible study has fallen off….it’s more like something that I check off my list rather than something that I look forward to and bask in.   I did a search on for “like a tree”, “branches” and “roots”, and here are some of the verses that came up:

Psalm 1:1-3 says:

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked

or stand in the way of sinners or

sit in the seat of mockers.

2But his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

3He is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

See that? It is by studying the Bible regularly (day and night), that we will prosper.

John 15:4-5 says:

4Remain in me, and I will remain in you.

For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

5“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches.

Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit.

For apart from me you can do nothing.

Ooh, that one really hits me – apart from Him we can do nothing.  We will not bear fruit, rather, we will wither and die.  In that same respect, Jeremiah 17:8 says:

They are like trees planted along a riverbank,

with roots that reach deep into the water.

Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought.

Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.

We’ve got to root ourselves deep into the Living Water so we won’t be bothered by the heat or the months of drought!  We need to continue to soak in His truths so we won’t be like the tree whose roots were shallowly planted.   Praise God for these words!

Are you in a season of drought?  Are your leaves withering, or are they staying green and bearing fruit?

Happy Sunday, and blessings to you this week!
