I Want My Traaaaaaansforrrrrmer Shirrrrrt!!

I got out of bed this morning to the sounds of my 4-year-old having a total meltdown (first thing in the morning) and my husband trying to talk him through it (or out of it).

Our wonderful family gave him some very nice Transformer shirts and a Lightning McQueen (Cars) shirt yesterday for Easter. Of course he wanted to wear them right away, so my husband let him put on the Optimus Prime shirt. Fine and dandy (though I usually prefer to wash them first). So he wears it for a couple of hours and gets it dirty. Go figure.

This morning he had his heart set on wearing THAT shirt to preschool. Not any of the other equally cool ones, but THAT one. When my husband told him no, major meltdown ensues.

After about an HOUR (no joke) of screaming, crying, whining, yelling, etc., I finally tell him that if he’s going to be unappreciative of the other cool shirts that he has, then he doesn’t get to wear a new shirt today. He’ll have to pick a totally different shirt.

Of course he says he wants to wear the Bumblebee Transformer shirt. Great. I’m ecstatic.

Well, for the next half-hour it’s:
BugBuddy: “Which of these shirts should I wear?”
Me: “You pick, whichever one you want is great.”
BugBuddy: “But you’re my mommy and I love you. I want you to pick.” (Where was this philosophy an hour ago?)
Me: “The Bumblebee shirt.”
BugBuddy: “Why do you want the Bumblebee shirt? The Cars shirt is really cool too.”
Me: “Okay, the Cars shirt.”
BugBuddy: “But the Bumblebee shirt is really cool, too.”

AARRGGHH!!

So now we have to leave in 10 minutes, and he is STILL. SITTING. IN. HIS. UNDERWEAR. After an hour-and-a-half!
And did I mention that SweetPea has been whining and crying in the background for most of the morning too?
(pulling my hair out by the roots)

I told him we were leaving for school in a few minutes and if he wasn’t dressed, he’d get pretty cold. He said “I don’t have any pants to put on”, to which I replied “they’re on the couch, where they’ve been all morning.”

He put on his pants, socks AND his Bumblebee Transformer shirt (to which he says “this shirt is so cool. I want to wear it all the days”) in less than 2 minutes.

  5. Don’t you love those days? I hate when the kiddo’s call my bluff and then I have to put the clothes in the bag and take him to the garage. usually he ends up putting his clothes on then!
    Thanks for joining in!

    • FrugalVicki, One time I brought him to work with me in whatever state of dress he happened to have been in (might have been his shirt & underwear, but I can't remember now). It was chilly too, but he absolutely refused to get dress no matter what I tried. He got the rest of his clothes on amazingly quickly before he got out of the car!

  7. Oh yes, we love those days! No, not so much. But sounds like you handled it well!! Personally I would have gone with the Cars shirt, but that’s just me…

  9. Wow sounds like my oldest., Nothing is ever cool enough except that one shirt that is either to small or dirty. Only now it’s attitude instead of temper tantrums. Glad you finally got him dressed.

    • I hear you, Kati! We went through something similar a while back with wanting to wear robot shirts everyday. I even went so far as to buy a bunch of iron-on patches and guess who stopped wanting to wear them all the time?!

  11. Clothes even! Yeesh, for some reason I’m not thinking clearly this morning.

    • Hmmmm……can’t imagine why that is! Yes, he finally got dressed, didn’t have to go to school naked this morning. 🙂
Will be doing a load of kid laundry tonight for sure….
